DVD Review: "Hotel Transylvania"
If computer animated, family friendly monster movies are what you have been dreaming of then 2012 was definitely your year.
The fall found 3 movies in this rare genre released: "ParaNorman," "Frankenweenie" and the best of the bunch ... "Hotel Transylvania."
While the former two films garnered Oscar nominations for best Animated Feature Film, "Hotel Transylvania" won the box office race and rightly so because it's F-U-N!
Stylistically it is not like "ParaNorman" or "Frankenweenie." It's not dark, not brooding and doesn't feel the need to include jokes that only the adults will understand. Instead, "Hotel Transylvania" is that rare animated film that pleases everyone! It's bright, cheery and, above all, funny.
But it's not just a bunch of gross-out bodily function jokes either. This film tackles issues of belonging, acceptance and letting kids grow up and move on ... even if they are only 118 years-old!
Credit goes to screenwriters Peter Baynham (Arthur Christmas) and Robert Smigel (Saturday Night Live) for keeping the jokes coming fast and furiously while still maintaining some heart and soul.
The vocal talent hits a home run as well, led by Saturday Night Live alumni Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Molly Shannon and David Spade, plus Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, CeeLo Green and Fran Drescher. Everyone of these actors delivers there lines with perfect comedic timing!
The DVD includes bonus features ...
- Mini Movie: "Goodnight Bigfoot"
- Deleted Scenes
- Filmmakers' Commentary
+ Ultraviolet Digital Copy
and more!
But as a consumer the most important thing about "Hotel Transylvania" is that your kids will want to watch over and over again.
Drumroll please... 9 out of 10 wooden stakes!!
