Music Review: 'Til Tuesday - "Voices Carry" CD Reissued
Long before Aimee Mann was the champion for Alternative Indie Rock she fronted the 80's band 'Til Tuesday.
Their debut album "Voices Carry" has just been remastered and re-released through the UK's "Hot Shot Records." "Voices Carry" was released in 1985 and spawned the wildly successful hit single of the same name... "Voices Carry." The song peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and the music video was in heavy rotation on the fledgling network MTV. The band released two more singles from their debut album... "Looking Over My Shoulder" and "Love In A Vacuum." Both of these singles failed to chart in the top 40 and the band's 15 minutes was just about over.
To be honest 'Til Tuesday was never my cup of tea. In the 80's I was hooked on the "corporate rock" train led by bands such as Journey, Foreigner and REO Speedwagon but if you like 80's synth pop rock you'll love "Voices Carry."
Mann's vocals are excellent and some of the lesser known tracks are quite good. "Looking Over My Shoulder" in particular has a cool Madness "One Step Beyond" feel that is quite catchy and it is a shame this song didn't do better on the pop charts. If No Doubt covered this song today it would probably be a huge success.
Now because 'Til Tuesday is not in my area of expertise I don't feel it would be fair to give it a # rating.
What I can tell you is that Hot Shot Records has put together a great reissue that includes 3 bonus tracks (single mixes of the 3 aforementioned songs), a nice booklet with newly written liner notes and perfectly remastered sound.
If you were a fan of this band in the 80's then "Voices Carry" is the perfect way to relive those keyboard driven days gone by.
