Music Review: The FIXX - "Beautiful Friction" CD
The FIXX has never been a band that was on my musical radar. I remember them from the height of the MTV era with hits like "Red Skies," "One Thing Leads To Another" and "Saved By Zero" but that is pretty much where my relationship with The FIXX begins and ends. If they came on the radio I wouldn't turn the channel but I also didn't seek out and purchase any of their songs when the iTunes era was ushered in.
Needless to say, when their new CD "Beautiful Friction" turned up in my mailbox for me to review I was less than enthusiastic.
Cut to: 48 minutes later...
Reviewer hits play button on car stereo as the new CD by The FIXX plays again in its entirety!
Yes "Beautiful Friction" has now become one of my favorite albums of 2012.
Cy Curnin and company have made an album that has barely a trace of retro 80's feel within its digital grooves. The band has actually made an album that sounds current and could be played side by side with any new band on the radio today.
From the opening drums of "Anyone Else" through "Just Before Dawn" and "Take A Risk" the band starts strong and never lets up! In the new world of digital downloads where the consumer favors songs over complete albums The FIXX have stood their ground and made "Beautiful Friction" a collection of songs that need to be heard from start to finish. This is what the album experience is all about.
Are the Individual songs great ala carte?… Yes! But, do yourself a favor and digest the whole meal you won't be sorry and your ears will probably want to eat again and again.
Drumroll please… 9 out of 10 drumsticks!!
