Movie Review: Safety Not Guaranteed
Directed by Colin Trevorrow and written by Derek Connolly, Safety Not Guaranteed is an indie Comedy film set in Washington that tells the tale of Darius (Aubrey Plaza), an intern at a Seattle magazine who is sent on an assignment to investigate the poster of a classified ad about looking for a partner to time travel with who turns out to be an eccentric grocery store clerk named Kenneth (Mark Duplass). Drama and humor ensue when Darius begins to fall in love with Kenneth. Safety Not Guaranteed won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
There is nothing worse than a bad indie film. The kind that makes you say "I'm never going to my local Sundance cinema ever again!" But every once in a while a true gem pops up that is so uniquely entertaining that you can't help but tell your friends to seek it out. Safety Not Guaranteed is one of those movies.
Brief yet dense, this movie wastes no time jumping into the story and toys with the viewers emotions as it builds up to a brilliant ending. Safety Not Guaranteed offers an optimistic take on what could have been a very depressing story that will lift your spirits and warm your heart. Expect a well-written, unique story with realistic characters who you can't help but sympathize with.
Though billed as a comedy, the drama holds more weight than the humor in this film, however there are plenty of clever lines and Duplass provides a bounty of physical comedy. He plays a very mysterious and intense character who you are not so sure of until the very end. And his chemistry with Plaza, whose performance is outstanding, is perfect for this movie. Safety Not Guaranteed is an overall well-cast production, also featuring Jake M. Johnson, Karan Soni, Jeff Garlin as Darius' father, and Mary Lynn Rajskub as her boss.
This is a charming film with a lot of heart. I loved Safety Not Guaranteed.
