Friends with Kids DVD Review
Jennifer Westfeldt wrote, starred, and made her directorial debut in Friends with Kids. This all star ensemble cast involves most of the comedic talent from Bridesmaids: Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Chris O'Dowd, and Westfeldt's longtime boyfriend, Jon Hamm. Rounding out the rest of the cast is Party Down alum Adam Scott and Transformers vixen Megan Fox!
Scott and Westfeldt play best friends who attempt to help each other in their relationships, both being rather promiscuous. Their friends are all rooting for them to end up together (can you see where this is going?). Time passes and Scott and Westfeldt realize that the rest of their friends are settling down and having kids, but are becoming more and more miserable. One drunken night they decided to conceive a child out of wedlock, having the best of both worlds, but without the complications of marriage or a relationship.
This movie was very predictable and I kept waiting for something more to happen, but it never did. I'm not sure if I was expecting it to be funnier because of the cast or if it would be funnier if I was a 30-something with kids, but there was not a whole lot of humor. With an all star cast (most of which were from the funniest movie of 2011), I expected a lot more funny.
I will say that despite all of the predictability and the lack of humor, this film did have a lot of heart. It was a satisfying feeling to watch these two child-like people grow up and assume (some) responsibility.
