Movie Review: The Expendables 2
Stallone, Statham, Li, Lundgren, Norris, Van Damme, Willis, Schwarzenegger... These names and more make up the epic but laughable ensemble cast of the sequel to 2010's action extravaganza The Expendables, The Expendables 2. Directed by the director of The Mechanic and Con Air, Simon West, this film continues the story of the infamous mercenary group known as the Expendables. When villain Jean Vilain (Van Damme) gains possession of a very deadly weapon the Expendables take action, however when Vilain murders one of the Expendables in front of their eyes things get personal.
Sweet iron-pumping Jesus there is a lot of middle-aged testosterone in this movie. It almost seems satirical how extreme this movie tries to be. As if it is making fun of itself and other action films like it. Yet I actually found The Expendables 2 to be pretty enjoyable. Perhaps it was the bad ass stunts, or the bone-crunching fight scenes, or just the idea of all of these macho men with egos as big as their biceps working together in one ridiculous movie.
This kind of movie is not my cup of tea, or more appropriately my cup of protein shake, but I went in with an open mind expecting a very active yet corny action movie that may not be intellectually stimulating but will at least be mildly laughable. And that is exactly what I got. The story line is not the most important part of this movie. If it was, I would be giving it 2/10 Chuck Norrises. But the ensemble cast, action sequences, and stunts make The Expendables 2 an entertaining production.
Other observations: This movie is really loud! Stallone comes off as a very arrogant and unlikeable protagonist. And there is one hilarious line in the second half of the movie. Oh and also Schwarzenegger saying "I'll be back" wasn't that funny the first time and it definitely wasn't funny the third time.
I will probably see the next one.
6.5/10 Chuck Norrises
