Casa de Mi Padre DVD Review
Casa de Mi Padre is a Will Ferrell Spanish language film. Yes you read that correctly. Also starring, Diego Luna (Milk), Efren Ramirez (Napoleon Dynamite), and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Casa de Mi Padre holds the same type of humor as any other Will Ferrell vehicle.
The film was originally described as an "overly dramatic telenovela" and I can't think of a better phrase to describe it. The basic plot is that Ferrell is the disappointment of the family. His brother (Luna) comes back to the land with his fiance who Ferrell falls in love with, but she has ties to a Mexican drug lord and rival of Luna. The wackiness of other Ferrell/McKay comedies comes through in this film via purposefully cheesy transitions and other humorous parts.
It was surprisingly funny! I was worried the comedy wouldn't translate well because of being completely in Spanish, but it added a whole other layer to the film. I thought that there might be an English language option on the DVD for those who are wary about the subtitle idea, but there was not.
