Music Review: Methods of Mayhem - "A Public Disservice Announcement"

They're back whether you asked for them or not! Methods of Mayhem was gone (and forgotten) for eleven years, but have just released a new album! You may remember (but probably don't) that in 1999 Tommy Lee left Motley Crue and formed Methods of Mayhem and released a mediocre self-titled album with a plethora of guest stars (Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst and Snoop Dogg to name a few).

Tommy Lee has brought the band back (from the dead?) with John "J3" Allen III, Will Hunt, Phil X, Marty O'Brien, and DJ Aero. By the album artwork and the title A Public Disservice Announcement I was expecting some really heavy Nu Metal sound with a decent amount of rapping since it is considered Nu Metal/Rap Metal, however, this was not entirely the case.

The first track is lovingly titled "Drunk Uncle Pete" and sounds a bit like "Beverly Hills" by Weezer combined with anything by Sublime. Despite my comparison, this track is very catchy and has a good beat and decent guitar riffs. It doesn't flow so well when going to the next track which is a significantly slower pace, but still a good song called "Time Bomb."

"Fight Song" is the first single off of the album and is by far the heaviest song on the album and easily my favorite. It feels like Nu Metal should: KoRn, Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park all back in the day.

Not all of the songs are nu metal or hard rock sounding though, "Louder" and "Blame" are both softer, almost ballad-esque songs. These songs feel very familiar and have a classic rock feel to them while still being modern rock.

Three songs have a techno/dance feel to them: "All I Wanna Do," "Back to Before" and "Party Instructions." The latter of these two is my least favorite, yet possibly the funniest song I have heard in a while. It's like if a techno beat was peppered with 8-bit video game sounds while Andrew W.K. type lyrics were read by Stephen Hawking. With lyrics like this "Where is the g*ddamn Jagermeister b*tches?" read by Microsoft Sam, whats not to love (and hate)?

Overall, this album is well rounded and has a lot of catchy songs as well as some new songs that have a familiar sound. With an album sounding as diverse as this, there is a handful of songs that appeal to everybody.

    I give this a 6.5/10 and it's definitely worth a listen.
