In 1989 Phil Collins had the unenviable task of trying to follow-up his multi-platinum solo album "No Jacket Required."
This was no small feat considering that the 1985 breakout album sold 12 million copies in the US alone!
"... But Seriously" was released on November 7, 1989 and proved that Phil Collins was, in fact, a solo artist to be reckoned with. The first single, "Another Day On Paradise" was lyrically one of Collins' most serious to date and was written to bring attention to the homeless situation across the world. The song went to #1 in 4 countries and quickly paved the way for 2 more top 5 singles: "I Wish It Would Rain Down" and "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven." Both pushed Collins' 4th solo album to the top of the charts in 11 countries including 4 weeks at #1 in the US and an impressive 15 week run in the UK.
It's been 23 years since its release and "...But Seriously" is finally getting the much-needed, remastered treatment.
Audio Fidelity has just released "...But Seriously" on 24 KT Gold CD. As with his first 3 solo albums: "Face Value," "Hello, I Must Be Going" and "No Jacket Required," Audio Fidelity has taken "...But Seriously" and made it sound better than it ever has. The drum sound alone is worth the price of admission!
Although "...But Seriously" is not my personal favorite Phil Collins album (that award would go to "Hello, I Must Be Going") I would still highly recommend the Audio Fidelity version to anyone who loves Collins' more "serious" side.
Drumroll please...
"... But Seriously" the album... 6 out of 10 drumsticks
"... But Seriously" the Audio Fidelity Gold CD... 9 out of 10 drumsticks
