Lights Out is an hour of Jo Koy's stand-up material, filmed at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California. Jo Koy is a comedian of Filipino heritage, and I mention that only because he starts his show with several jokes about being Filipino ("Somewhere in Glendale there is an empty hospital"). The first big laugh for me came at the end of his bit about his mom, where he talks about slipping roofies into people's drinks. He tells guys not to do that, then quickly adds, "This is what I do... Don't roofy a girl, that's illegal... When you're out drinking with a girl, use the voice that she thinks she hears when she's being roofied." Also, his bit about tornadoes is hilarious.
However, the majority of his show focuses on his family. He talks about being a dad, and he has this bit of advice for men who are thinking of becoming fathers: "Pull out." He thrusts forward - "Baby" - then pulls back - "No baby." He thrusts forward again - "Mini-van" - then pulls back - "Sports car." That's great. He does a lot of stuff about parenting, which I personally can't relate to but still found funny. And there is a lot of material about his mom and his grandmother. Jo Koy credits his grandmother as the source of his sense of humor. Sounds about right to me, because the stuff about his grandmother is seriously funny.
Clearly, family is very important to him. After the credits on the DVD, he brings his son out on stage. And we also catch a moment backstage with his mom.
The DVD's special features include a seven-minute featurette titled "All Access," which is basically backstage footage from before the show. It also includes some pointless footage of people walking into the theatre, and then just a little bit after the show where he says that the best part of the whole thing for him was bringing his son out on stage.
The other special feature, "DJ Josephine," is footage of Jo Koy as a special guest on his mother's AM radio talk program. That feature also includes footage of Jo Koy at the cafe where he first performed stand-up.
Lights Out was released on April 3, 2012. The program debuted on Comedy Central on April 1, 2012. The DVD includes fifteen minutes that was not in the original broadcast. Jo Koy's first Comedy Central special, Don't Make Him Angry, is also available on DVD.
