Book Review: "Eddie Trunk's Essential Hard Rock And Heavy Metal Volume II"

After the success of the 2011 release "Eddie Trunk's Essential Hard Rock And Heavy Metal" it was inevitable that a Vol. II would be released.

The first book had just about every multiplatinum band you could think of... AC/DC, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Metallica and the list goes on and on and on...

    Time to "Stump The Trunk"...

Question:  What can you expect from "Volume II?"
    Answer:  Disappointment

Unlike the first book and it's stellar list of bands "Volume II" is made up of the B-Squad and in some cases even worse.

For every Queen, RUSH or Van Halen from the first book now we get Angel, Dokken and Warrant.

If the publishers had any forethought they would have constructed these books in Volumes that covered A - H, I - Q and R - Z that way each book would contain equal parts Rock Legends Vs. Rock Almosts.

The book follows the same format as the previous edition with full color pictures, 5 - 8 page history of the band, discography, fun facts and Eddie Trunk's own personal playlist picks.  The layout and execution is solid but lack of musical talent ends up being the downfall of this series.  I have no idea how their could be a Volume III given the fact that this edition has to pad out it's 240 pages with solo artists such as Slash, Zack Wylde and Ace Frehley.  Sure they're serviceable guitarists in their famous bands but, let's be honest, their solo careers have no business being covered in this book.  Ace Frehley has only released 2 solo albums in the past 24 years. Have you heard them?  I didn't think so.

Trunk does his best to make these lame ducks sound important and relevant. But in the end, it barely compares to the first edition.  Put "Volume I" on your coffee table and "Volume II" in the bathroom.

    Drumroll please...

    4 out of 10 drumsticks!!!
