Blu-Ray Review: "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone"
"The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" is out now on Blu-Ray and DVD and there is simply nothing magical about it.
On paper this movie sounds like a home run. Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi as a magical duo who no longer get along, Jim Carrey as their Criss Angel like rival and Adam Arkin as the now retired magician who was Carell's boyhood idol so what went wrong?
Well... the movie just isn't funny!
It's as if the whole project was green-lit on premise alone and with stars attached.
A movie about rival magicians with Carell and Carrey should be a no brainer but we never even get a glimpse of where this movie could have gone. The blame has to fall on the script written by Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Frances Daley. The opening sequences of a young Burt Wonderstone receiving a magic kit for his birthday have a lot of heart but a comedy needs to be funny and this one just isn't. The most frustrating thing is that Goldstein and Daley proved they had comedic chops with 2011's over the top funny "Horrible Bosses."
The world of magic needs to be fantastical just as the world of comedy needs to be hysterical and unfortunately for the viewer this film has neither.
Drumroll please... 4 out of 10 magic wands!!!
