2 BROKE GIRLS: PALEYFEST 2013 by Marques Wayne

The panel for CBS's 2 Broke Girls was one of the most anticipated of the festival and I was not disappointed!  The buzz in the press tent wasn't as crazy as it was for The Big Bang Theory the night before, so it was easier to pick up soundbites from the actors on the red carpet. 

It was clear that casting the show must have been a breeze for the co-creators Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City) and Whitney Cummings (Whitney!) because the actors were all as funny and likable in person as their characters are on TV.  

Kat Dennings, who stars as the sarcastic pessimist Max, told me she wasn't sure if Caroline (Beth Behrs) and Max would ever be in a relationship at the same time, but it would be interesting to explore that dynamic on the show.  Up until now, only one has had a steady love interest at a time, but at present they are both single though it's rumored that Ryan Hansen's Candy Andy might return.

I have to admit, I was most excited to meet Garrett Morris, an original Saturday Night Live cast member, who plays Earl, the wisecracking elder-statesman on the show.  He more than lived up to his colorful depiction on the show.  One reporter asked each cast member about funny (or tragic) things they did at 'broke' moments in their own lives and Morris's answer was easily the most detailed and hilarious, albeit too racy to recount to you here.  

On the panel the stars were joined by King and the moderator, Entertainment Tonight's Christina McLarty, who is a self-professed, huge fan of the show's edgy dialogue.  One fan asked if there were constant fights with the censors about the raunchy jokes that the show is know for, and King revealed that there was one infamous word that didn't get past them even in Pig-Latin.  He did add though, that for the most part the network and the censors get that their show is edgy and understand that their "high low-brow" humor is part of its appeal.
