Concert Review: Suzanne Vega "LIVE" @ The Herbst Theatre in San Francisco

This past Friday night in San Francisco, Suzanne Vega gave the packed audience at the beautiful Herbst Theatre exactly what they wanted... perfection.

I have seen many artists perform in the "solo acoustic" format.
Some hit it out of the park (Jackson Browne, Marshall Crenshaw) while others struggle to find the perfect balance of what they want to achieve and what the audience wants. (those performers shall remain nameless)

Suzanne Vega definitely hit a grand slam.  Everything about her performance was perfect.  From her charming witty stage patter to her pitch perfect performance Vega gave the audience exactly what they came for... stories, jokes and her wonderful catalogue of songs.

The set list covered songs from her entire catalogue with an extended set of tunes from  her break through album "Solitude Standing."  Highlights included "Gypsy," "Blood Makes Noise" and "Caramel" plus a few brand new songs not yet recorded including the crowd pleasing "I Never Wear White."

After closing out her set with her two most well known hits "Tom's Diner" and "Luka" Vega returned to the stage to play 3 requests from the audience proving that she was more than eager to please.

Vega's performance was augmented by her touring guitarist Gerry Leonard.  Leonard's acoustic and sometimes electric guitar playing style added so much texture and power to the songs without being obtrusive.  The two musicians meshed perfectly with a sound that could be described as U2's The Edge meets Joni Mitchell.

Suzanne and Gerry will be playing dates across the country through March and if they come to your area definitely make a date to see this incredible singer/songwriter.

Drumroll please... 9 out of 10 drumsticks !!!
