Blu-ray Review: "The Dark Knight Returns Part 2"
"Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2," the much anticipated follow-up to last years "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1," is finally here!
When I reviewed Part 1 and gave it a much deserved 10 out of 10 rating I had no idea DC Direct Animation could top that masterpiece well... they did!! To steal the over used quote of Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel... "This one goes to 11."
"Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2" picks up right where "Part 1" left off and watching these two films back to back is a comic book nerd's dream come true!
Watching Selina Kyle, Commissioner Gordan, Clark Kent and of course Bruce Wayne come to grips with the new violent world around them is amazing.
Politics are also on full display with one of the main characters being non other than President Ronald Reagan. If there was ever any doubt what Superman's political affiliation is you can rest assured he is a Republican while I assume Batman would be more of an Independent (wink!).
The animation is perfect with many images taken directly from "The Dark Knight Returns" graphic novel. The tone is not for the faint of heart and given the recent mass shooting events that have taken place across the country, the scene where the Joker enters an amusement park "tunnel of love" is absolutely bone chilling.
Parents should know that "The Dark Knight Returns" is not a movie for the kids. It is rated PG-13 for a reason and being a parent I would suggest watching it by yourself before deciding if your child is mature enough to handle the themes and images presented.
Joining the vocal talent of Peter Weller's Batman, Ariel Winter's Robin and David Selby's Commissioner Gordan are Lost's Michael Emerson as The Joker, Mark Valley as Superman and even Conan O'Brien as a talk show host not long for this world.
With "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1" and "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2" DC Direct has once again proven that some of the best superhero movies produced today aren't always on the big screen.
The Blu-ray contains many special features including:
-Digital Comic Excerpt from the graphic novel: The Dark Knight Falls by Frank Miller
(Exclusive on Blu-Ray)
- Superman Vs. Batman: When Heroes Collide
-The Joker: Laughing in the Face of Death
-Preview of Dc Universe's Next Animated Movie: "Superman: Unbound."
Drumroll please... 10 out of 10 Bat-a-rangs!!
