First of all, “Pinkie Pie Party” is fun to say. Truly. Go ahead, say it. See? Now say it in the voice of a rich older woman on a plantation in Georgia: “I declare we shall have a Pinkie Pie Party and invite all the important members of society.” It’s great fun. And now you’re probably in a good enough mood for the newest My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic DVD, “Pinkie Pie Party.”
This DVD features five episodes from the television program, each episode focusing on the character Pinkie Pie. At the end of each episode either Twilight or Pinkie Pie writes a letter to Princess Celestia, in which she clearly spells out the lesson or moral children (and adults) should take away from it.
Here is a brief run-down of the episodes in this collection.
“Feeling Pinkie Keen”
In the first episode, Pinkie Pie makes a series of predictions based on various twitches she has. The first indicates that something is about to fall from the sky. Twilight tells her it’s not going to rain, and then immediately a frog falls on her (like on William H. Macy in Magnolia). Is it a coincidence? Everyone believes in Pinkie Pie’s ability to predict, everyone except Twilight. Pinkie Pie tells her, “You don’t believe because you don’t understand.” So Twilight hooks her up to some 1950s science fiction laboratory equipment, so that science can help her understand. But then the only thing that twitches is her tummy, and, as she says, that indicates she’s hungry. Later when Twilight is in trouble and needs to jump across a chasm to escape from a hydra, Pinkie tells her, “You have to take a leap of faith.” Twilight becomes a believer. She says, “Just because I don’t understand doesn’t mean it’s not true.” She’s been converted. It’s hard to get around the strong Christian tones in this episode.
“Party Of One”
Pinkie Pie invites everyone to a party for her alligator’s birthday, and does it in song. By the last invitation, she is exhausted. Everyone has fun at the party. Twilight says they should do it again soon, so the next day Pinkie Pie throws another party. But it’s too soon, and everyone gives her an excuse for not making it. Pinkie Pie begins to suspect something, and spies on other ponies, seeing they’re not doing what they said they were going to do. And Pinkie Pie goes a little mad. Hey, it can happen to the best of us. By the way, the alligator makes me laugh every time it’s shown.
“Baby Cakes”
Twin ponies are born (one a unicorn, the other a Pegasus), and Pinkie Pie wants to celebrate immediately. The parents need a babysitter, and though Pinkie Pie volunteers, they ignore her. For though she clearly loves playing with the babies, she seems to know nothing of the responsibilities involved in taking care of them. But no one else is available, so… The babies cry, and Pinkie Pie immediately doesn’t know what to do. She says, “These babies just won’t listen to reason. And don’t even get me started on their taste in stand-up comedy.” I love the bit where she’s searching for the Pegasus and discovers it walking on the ceiling. Pinkie writes this episode’s letter to Princess Celestia: “Being a care-giver is way more responsibility than just being a playmate.”
“A Friend In Deed”
Pinkie Pie goes about making all the ponies smile, and singing a song about it. Soon everyone is singing about smiling. A sad donkey named Cranky Doodle Donkey moves in, and Pinkie can’t get him to smile. And this confuses her (her mental checklist is really funny – “Introduce myself, check. Sing random song out of nowhere, check…”) Pinkie writes to Celestia: “There are many different kinds of friends, and many ways to express friendship.”
“Too Many Pinkie Pies”
Pinkie Pie freaks out because she might be missing fun things happening in various places. She has so many friends and she doesn’t want to miss anything fun that any of them might be doing. So she goes to a magic pool and makes a double of herself. But they still miss stuff, so they create two more duplicates. And then… Well, you read the episode’s title.
Bonus Features
The DVD has two bonus features. The first is “Smile, Smile, Smile!” Sing-Along, which is the scene when Pinkie Pie sings about making her friends smile, but with the lyrics on the screen for kids to follow along.
The second bonus feature is “Pinkie Pie Party Kit,” and this feature works only on computers.
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: Pinkie Pie Party is scheduled to be released on January 29, 2013 through Shout! Factory Kids. By the way, when you pop in the DVD, there is an advertisement for the previous DVD, Royal Pony Wedding, which was released in August of 2012.
