Blu-ray Review - "Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender"

To say legendary rocker Freddie Mercury was flamboyant would be an understatement. With his one of a kind voice and his flair for the theatrical Mercury achieved worldwide success as one of, if not the, greatest front men of all-time.

The just released documentary "Freddie Mercury The Great Pretender" sidesteps Mercury's success with Queen and focuses on Freddie's life and as he embarks on a solo career in the mid 80's.  Unfortunately that is where the film fails because Mercury's solo career turned out to be almost nonexistent.

"Freddie Mercury The Great Pretender" contains some new interviews but is mostly made up of file footage which in the age of HD TVs and Blu-ray DVDs does not hold up and I found the video quality to be quite poor for a majority of the film.

The Blu-ray bonus features are minimal and only include an extended interview with Freddie, an interview with famed opera singer Montserrat Caballe and The Making of the Caballe/Mercury album Barcelona.

If you are a Freddie completist then you will obviously want to own this Blu-ray but for a more in depth look I would skip this doc and check out the amazing "Queen: Days Of Our Lives" that was released earlier this year.

"Queen: Days Of Our Lives" is in my opinion the definitive Freddie Mercury/Queen documentary and one of the greatest Rock-Docs I have ever seen.

Drumroll please... 4 out of 10 drumsticks!!!
