    The A-B-Must Sees of Movies

Recently one of my friends asked for a list of movie recommendations. I sent him an alphabetized list which gave me this idea. Here are 26ish of my favorite movies that I would highly recommend, one for each letter of the alphabet! (I tried to stick with films that a lot of people haven't seen).

A - American Psycho (2000) - Starring Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, and Reese Witherspoon this film is a violent, bloody, and hilarious take on the 1980s yuppie culture based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis.

B - Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) - This film gets vastly overlooked when people talk about the Batman films. This was the first (and only) Batman animated film in theaters based upon Batman: The Animated Series. It's a very dark and gritty animated feature.

C - The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) - Starring Jim Caviezel, Guy Pearce, and Richard Harris. Based upon the novel by Alexander Dumas, this film has everything from betrayal to a prison break to the ultimate revenge!

D - The Dark Knight (2008) - Starring Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and the late Heath Ledger. The second installment of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy is dark and creepy. Ledger's performance as the Joker is unforgettable and makes the movie!

E - Ed Wood (1994) - Tim Burton directs this comedic biopic of the famed Ed Wood, director of "Plan 9 from Outer Space." Johnny Depp stars as Wood in this wacky and unforgettable tale set in the early Hollywood era.

F - Fight Club (1999) - David Fincher directs Edward Norton and Brad Pitt in this film based on the Chuck Palahniuk novel. The tagline describes the film perfectly: Mischief. Mayhem. Soap.

G - Grandma's Boy (2006) - Allen Covert, Nick Swardson, and the rest of the Happy Madison gang star in this hilarious stoner comedy about a video game tester who moves in with his Grandma.

H - High Fidelity (2000) - John Cusack stars in this fourth wall breaking, Stephen Frears film about musical taste and lost love.

I - In Bruges (2008) - Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Ralph Fiennes star in this funny film about two mobsters who are lying low in Bruges after a hit. It's a little hard to understand their fast paced jargon, but listen closely because every word they say is hilarious!

J - Juno (2007) - Directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody. This film is a funny and heart warming coming of age story starring Ellen Page, Michael Cera, and Jason Bateman.

K - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) - Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer make an unlikely private detective duo in this Shane Black's comedy noir film about mistaken identities and making it in Hollywood.

L - Lucky Number Slevin (2006) - A crime thriller about a man caught in the middle of two feuding crime lords. Josh Hartnett, Morgan Freeman, Lucy Liu, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Bruce Willis star.

M - Moon (2009) - Directed by Duncan Jones and starring Sam Rockwell. This film is a sci-fi thriller about an astronaut's last days stationed on a Moon base. His days are relatively boring until he makes and unexpected find on the surface.

N - Night Shift (1982) - Henry Winkler and Michael Keaton star in the Ron Howard directed comedy. These two late night morgue employees attempt to turn a profit by becoming pimps.

O - Office Space (1999) - Ron Livingston, Jennifer Aniston, and Gary Cole star in this Mike Judge comedy film about mundane office life and stickin' it to the company.

P - Primer (2004) - An amazing low budget sci-fi thriller about two engineers who accidentally create a time machine. It's one of those movies you just have to watch at least twice!

Q - I owe you one (I have never really seen a good "Q" movie)!

R - The Running Man (1987) - Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this Paul Michael Glasser film loosely based on the Richard Bachman (Stephen King) story of the same name. Arnold is put into a reality TV game show where criminals get to battle for their freedom. It has a lot of action, a little cheese, and Richard Dawson.

S - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010) - Edgar Wright directs this adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series. Think video games, comics, and anime set in a real world love story. It's a must see for any comic or 8-bit video game fan! It stars Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, and Jason Schwartzman.

T - Thank You For Smoking (2005) - Another Jason Reitman film, this one stars Aaron Eckhart and Katie Holmes. It follows a tobacco lobbyist in his day to day life.

U - Underworld (2003) - Forget Twilight! This brings the ancient feud of vampires and lycans (werewolves) to the modern world in this action/horror flick! Starring Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, and Bill Nighy.

V - John Carpenter's Vampires (1998) - James Woods leads a group of vampire hunters as they aim to rid the world of the vampire infestation.

W - Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) - This Robert Zemeckis film seemlessly blends cartoons and real people in this hilarious and fun mystery. It's amazing how great this film looks and how well it holds up today! Bob Hoskins and Christopher Lloyd star.

X - X-Men: First Class (2011) - This is the best X-Men film of the franchise. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are great as Prof. X and Magneto in the origin of the X-Men film franchise. Matthew Vaughn directs this film.

Y - Young Frankenstien (1974) - This is my favorite Mel Brooks film. Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle are hilarious in this re-imagining of the Frankenstein tale as only Mel Brooks can tell.

Z - Zombieland (2009) - Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg traverse across the Zombie ridden country looking for survival in this hilarious Zombie comedy!
