Batman: Earth One Graphic Novel Review
Back in 2010, DC introduced us to Earth One in the Superman: Earth One graphic novel. What is Earth One? It is DC's way of introducing audiences to alternate, more realistic origins of established characters (think Marvel's Ultimate Universe).
Batman: Earth One is the latest addition to the Earth One universe and like it's predecessor, it doesn't disappoint! It's hard to go wrong with DC veteran writer Geoff Johns (Blackest Night, Flashpoint) at the helm of the most iconic DC superhero. The writing, although phenomenal, would be nothing without the accompanying artwork of Johns' current Action Comics artist Gary Frank.
Forget everything you know about the Dark Knight and immerse yourself in Earth One. Thomas Wayne is running for mayor and to combat the death threats against his family he enlists the security help of an old friend, Alfred Pennyworth. Think of him as a combination between Liam Neeson in Taken and Batman Begins. However, the story doesn't stray too far from the original as Bruce is left an orphan and swears vengeance against the crime world. At the beginning he is a pretty terrible Batman, falling off of buildings and such (very akin to the scenes in Batman Begins), but with some help from a young Lucius Fox and ex-soldier Alfred, Batman becomes well... Batman!
There are a few familiar faces with a bit of a twist of course, as well as some tasteful nods to the original continuity. I highly recommend this to any comic book and/or Batman fan! It is available in stores now!
Overall, Batman: Earth One is a fun, unconventional re-telling of a familiar tale that is as good as the original!
10 out of 10 Batarangs!
Also, be sure to keep an eye out for Superman: Earth One Volume Two coming this November. Hopefully this means we'll be seeing more of the Earth One Universe in the coming years!
