I wasn't exactly expecting gold when I popped this one into the DVD player. Not sure why exactly, I just didn't expect greatness. Well, I didn't get greatness but I did get pretty goodness.
Chop is a funny horror comedy about a gruesome way to get revenge against someone who doesn't really remember what he did in the first place. There's plenty of gore here for those who are into that and more laughs than I expected.
The acting is good and the direction was pretty great from first time director Trent Haaga, writer of Deadgirl. There isn't much in the way of scares though with most of the horror coming from the gore but it was still a fun watch.
I didn't love it but it was much better than I expected it to be. It's a clever flick equal parts gross and funny and another notch on Bloody Disgusting's belt. I'm hoping they get behind a truly great horror film that I can spend paragraphs slathering with praise. While Chop isn't that movie, it's a good step towards it.
I'm looking forward to the next, not only from those involved with Chop but from BD Selects as well. Maybe something a little more cerebral a little less corn syrupy.
