For over 10 years author Megan McDonald has been entertaining young readers with the adventures of third grader Judy Moody and her brother Stink. After 13 books Judy Moody finally hit the big screen last summer in "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer" which is currently available on DVD.
Newcomer Jordana Beatty stars as the title character who decides that once school ends she is going to have the most "thriller summer" of her life. When Judy and her brother Stink, played by Parris Mosteller, find out that their parents are going to California without them Judy creates a "Thrill Points" list so that her and her friends can have the best summer ever.
Along the way we meet Aunt Opal who is kooky, fun-loving and willing to do just about anything her charges want. Aunt Opal's job is to watch her niece and nephew and keep them out of trouble until mom and dad return. As you might guess things don't go smoothly. Soon Judy's friends are earning more thrill points than she is -- that is until she decides to help Stink catch the legendary Bigfoot.
It all sounds a little crazy but there's enough hijinks and gross-out humor (poop sandwich anyone?) to keep the under 10 crowd entertained and laughing.
The screenplay was co-written by McDonald who keeps the character exactly as you remember her from the books. And, although there's not much for grown-ups to grab onto, the Dad's might enjoy Heather Graham who lights up the screen with her spunky performance.
Drumroll please... 7 out of 10 drumsticks!!!
