As a resident of Southern California I have been to The Troubadour many times. The first time you walk through the doors, you're struck by just how tiny the joint is! The patron capacity is 500 people -- but to be honest it feels much smaller than that.
Located on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood, California The Troubadour night club was ground zero for countless icons in entertainment history. Musicians such as James Taylor, Carole King, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt & Elton John. Then there are the comedians: Steve Martin, Cheech & Chong and the list goes on and on and on.
I'm not old enough nor fortunate enough to have seen a show in the singer~songwriter heyday of the 1970's, but watching the new documentary "Troubadours: The Rise of the Singer~Songwriter" made me feel as if I lived the experience.
Spoiler alert: This documentary is perfect!
I have read many books and seen other documentaries about these artists and this time period and none of them are even close to as good as "Troubadours: The Rise of the Singer~Songwriter."
Producer Eddie Schmidt and Director Morgan Neville are to be praised for the work they've put into this film. They get access to the actual performers who started their careers inside the walls of the club instead of going the cheap way and interviewing some stoner bartender who worked there or some photographer with a second hand account of the events.
"Troubadours: The Rise of the Singer~Songwriter" has it all ... history, humor and, of course, the music. I would recommend this DVD just so that you can watch Steve Martin tell a hysterical story about Glenn Frey naming his band "Eagles" not "The Eagles."
I can't say enough great things about this documentary so I'll just say ...
Drumroll please… 10 out of 10 drumsticks!!
