Music Review: Paul McCartney & Wings - "Band On The Run"
On the heels of the Beatles remastered catalogue and the John Lennon "Signature Box" comes the first title in the Paul McCartney Archive Collection: "Band On The Run."
Choosing "Band On The Run" as the first release makes perfect sense as it was a #1 album in the US and the UK, spawned 3 top 10 singles (including the #1 hit title track) and with over 3 million copies sold remains McCartney's best selling post-Beatles release.
37 years after its initial release, "Band On The Run" is still a great listen. Songs like "Jet," "Let Me Roll It," and "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five" are so good that McCartney still plays them in concert to this day. And, something you might not know… 7 of the 9 tracks were co-written by Linda McCartney. Take that Yoko!
The new reissue comes with a bonus CD with rare and live tracks including the hit "Helen Wheels" which was originally released on the US edition of the LP but not the UK version. Personally, I wish they would have left this song on the actual "Band On The Run" CD the way they did with the 25th Anniversary release. (Yes, this is the 3rd time "Band On The Run" has been released on CD.)
The remastering on the 2010 version is by far the best this album has ever sounded in the digital age. I assume that I will not be writing a review of the 40th Anniversary Edition in 2013 but, if they add "Helen Wheels" back into the running order, I just might!
Drumroll please… 9 out of 10 drumsticks!!
