"Hatchet" Review

Hatchet is the best and worst horror movie I've seen in a very long time. Confused?  Let me explain.

The tagline of the movie poster reads: "It's not a sequel. It's not a remake. And it's not based on a Japanese one." The supernatural antagonist is almost a complete rip-off of the original Friday the 13th storyline and even stars Kane Kodder as the Jason Voorhees-like character.  To be completely honest, this movie seems like a homage to the Friday the 13th Feature Series and the Writer/Director Adam Green does a great job of mimicking every little nuance found within that saga

The worst part about this movie is that it does a great job of re-creating the horrible First Act that was common in all slasher films of the 70s and 80s, complete with gratuitous female nudity and corny soundtrack.

Once the story finally gets to the Second Act, the movie pulls the viewer in.   Once you're in, you're going nowhere. Much like the thrill seekers in this tale of horror (That's not a spoiler, it's just obvious).  Eventually we find out the back-story (This is the part where we humanize the baddie) of the supernatural antagonist and it shows up and quite gruesomely starts doing what it does best (kill).   It was at this part of the movie that I realized I was surprisingly enjoying this horribly-titled slasher film.

It's been a few years since the theater release of this feature. It's sequel, Hatchet II, will be released in October 2010.  Tune in later today and I'll be posting an article with details about the release.

Netflix will be streaming Hatchet until September 1st so head over before this gem is gone.
