To be honest I was never a fan of Japanese animation or "anime" ... that is until I took my daughters to see Hayao Miyazaki's 2009 release "Ponyo." From then on my girls were hooked and so was I. Every Miyazaki film now sits proudly in our DVD collection as does the brand new Blu-Ray release "The Secret World Of Arrietty."
For his 9th Studio Ghibli release, Miyazki turned to the 1952 novel by Mary Norton, "The Borrowers" as his source material and has produced another movie that the entire family can enjoy. In the age of of loud, 3-D movies like "Shrek" and "Madagascar" that feel the need to throw in jokes or innuendos that will keep the grown-ups interested, Miyazaki entertains with his stunning visual style and gentle pacing. In that way he slowly brings the viewer into magical worlds that they have never seen before.
When I first saw "The Secret World Of Arrietty" at the local movie theatre you could hear a pin drop. Every single child was glued to the screen in anticipation of what would happen next as Arrietty and her family embarked on their day to day adventures of borrowing items that would help them survive in their tiny world beneath the floorboards.
As with previous Miyazaki films, this feature is released in the U.S. through Disney studios and dubbed into English. The vocal talent for "The Secret World Of Arrietty" includes Disney Channel stars Bridgit Mendler (Good Luck Charlie) and David Henrie (Wizards Of Waverly Place) in the lead roles of Arrietty and the the human boy who lives above the floorboards, Shawn. Rounding out the cast and supplying big laughs are comedians Amy Poehler (SNL, Parks & Recreation) as Arietty's overly anxious mom and living legend Carol Burnett as Hara the housekeeper (who is sure she is seeing little people)!
With it's enchanting storytelling and beautifully rendered animated images,"The Secret World Of Arrietty" is an animated feature film that will keep the entire family entertained for years to come.
The Blu-Ray special features such as Original Japanese storyboards, original Japanese trailers and a Bridgit Mendler music video make this release a welcome addition to your DVD collection.
Drumroll please... 9 out of 10 drumsticks!!
