The summer of the super hero movies is upon us and over the next 3 months comic book fans will get to see some of their all-time favorites hit the big screen including: 60's era X-Men, Green Lantern, Captain America and The Mighty Thor!
And if that isn't enough to keep your nerd flag flying… Marvel Animation and Disney Studios has just released the new animated series "The Avengers" on DVD.
This is not the first time Marvel has brought their beloved characters from the comics to the small screen. Over the years we've seen animated versions of "The Fantastic Four," "The Hulk," "Iron Man" and of course "Spider-Man." But unlike DC Animation who has scored home runs with shows like: "Batman: The Animated Series," "Justice League: Unlimited," and "Superman" Marvel has never quite gotten it right ... that is until now!
With "The Avengers" Marvel has finally given fans what they've been looking for with a show the features "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" in all their butt-kicking glory. Each and every one of the team is here. From the core team of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk to Ant-Man, Wasp, Black Panther and Hawkeye. The animation is top notch and doesn't feel or look cheap like some of Marvel's past efforts. The vocal talent is great too and I liked the way the actors are trying to imitate the actors from the live action blockbuster films. Eric Loomis as Tony Stark/Iron Man channels his best Robert Downey Jr. impression. For me it pays off and adds a nice crossover continuity to the characters.
The series is spread out over two volumes and 13 episodes in which we get some origin stories followed by The Avengers working together as a team. Bonus features include an inside look at what's coming up for Season 2, including a sneak peak at some characters who will make appearances like "The Thing" and "Marvel Girl." They also show us how the artists plan on updating the team's costumes; Captain America and Thor's new duds will resemble what they are wearing on the big screen this summer.
"The Avengers" is not perfect. The stories still need to be more focused and story lines not so rushed while the dialogue could be a little less "old school" cartoonish. But, with the help of Disney Studios, Marvel is finally on track. And if they keep the stories interesting and the animation level high they just might give the "Justice League" a run for their money in the animated world!
So, until "The Avengers" live action movie hits movie theaters across the country in the summer of 2012, fans of these iconic heroes should definitely check out this animated series.
