Jack Black returns to DVD with a modern-day retelling of "Gulliver's Travels." Black plays Lemuel Gulliver, a guy in his 30's who's just happy working in the mail room where he dreams of one day asking a travel magazine editor, Darcy Silverman (Amanda Peet) on a date. When Gulliver gets passed up for a promotion by his newest underling he decides to impress Darcy and pretend to be a writer. Darcy gives him his first assignment, which takes him through the Bermuda Triangle, where he eventually ends up in Lilliput - a kingdom where no one is bigger than your thumb.
Once there, Gulliver's adventures begin as he eventually becomes a hero to the people of Lilliput and helps a common man named Horatio (Jason Segal) try to win the love of Princess Mary (Emily Blunt). The gags are plenty and they don't spare the bathroom jokes. These include one scene of Gulliver putting out a castle fire that has to be seen to be believed. This scene left my 10 and 6 year-olds in hysterics and I must admit I had a pretty good chuckle as well.
The cast is great and as Gulliver, Jack Black brings a wide-eyed innocence and wonder that kids can relate to. He's much easier for youngsters to identify with in these "man-child roles" than Ben Stiller, Will Ferel or even Adam Sandler. Black seems so much sillier and non-threatening.
The Blu-Ray DVD contains over 90 minutes of bonus features including: exclusive shorts, a gag reel and a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the movie called "Gulliver's Fun Pack."
In the end you can probably figure out what happens with Princess Mary, Horatio, Gulliver and Darcy but getting there is lots of fun.
"Gulliver's Travels" is not the perfect family movie but there's enough potty humor in this genuine feel good epic tale to keep all ages entertained.
