Am I gaga for the Goo Goo Dolls? Not really. But I do have everyone of their singles in my iPod and their 2007 compilation, "Greatest Hits Volume One" is loaded top to bottom with songs that most people might be embarrassed to admit they know.
Like Bon Jovi, the Goo Goo Dolls have managed to stay in the public's consciousness by releasing radio-friendly pop songs for the past 15 years. Songs like "Name," "Iris," "Slide," and "Better Days." Plus their last 3 studio albums have all been top 20 sellers. And I think "Something For The Rest Of Us" might just follow suit.
John Rzeznik and the boys return with another solid effort and producers Tim Palmer (Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne, U2), Butch Vig and John Fields have kept the band right on track with a collection of 12 new songs full of possible hit singles.
My only problem with the CD is that it might sound a little too familiar. I like what I'm hearing but maybe we've heard it before. The songs are definitely catchy and radio-friendly but I'm concerned that, with 4 years under their belts since the last studio album, the band hasn't expanded their musical palate and are resting on their laurels a little bit.
This might be the reason why this successful band doesn't have much street cred. But bands know it's hard to have it both ways. After all, not every rock group can be U2 or the Foo Fighters -- and deep down maybe the Goo Goo Dolls are happy making pop music that puts a smile on their fans' faces.
I think diehard fans will love this CD but maybe next time out the Goo Goo Dolls will record "Something For The Rest Of Us."
