DVD Review: Rob Thomas: Something To Be Tour - Live at Red Rocks

Rob Thomas releases his brand new solo album, Cradlesong, today along with a great concert DVD taken from his tour stop at Red Rocks. This show was originally broadcast for the PBS series Soundstage but this release features seven additional songs not included in the original broadcast.

The 18 song collection features songs from Thomas' solo album as well as from Matchbox Twenty plus a cover of a David Bowie classic. The show was captured in high definition, which is probably why it looks so great on the PS3, and is presented in 5.1 Surround Sound

It's a great show that I am mad I missed. Thomas has a truly unique voice both vocally and lyrically. He really is a great songwriter and performer. I really enjoyed every song presented here.

It's funny, I was watching Real Time with Bill Maher earlier and he was interviewing Billy Bob Thornton who was saying that there are not many people that our generation can say will be recognized as legends 50-100 years from now. That we can't say we have our own Beatles or our own Michael Jackson. It may be a bit premature to call Rob Thomas a legend but he certainly has the chops to be so.

Live at Red Rocks is a great showcase for Rob Thomas' talents as a musician and as a singer and he proves again why he ranks among my favorites performing today. He has such a great emotional connection with his words and songs. It's on perfect display here with this release. He does it all during this show. We have performances with the full band, Thomas alone on a piano, and an acoustic set.

This is definitely a purchase for any fans of Rob Thomas or Matchbox Twenty. If you can't make it to see him on his upcoming tour, this is the next best thing.

    1. Isn't Michael Jackson our generation's Michael Jackson?

    2. No. If you look when he started it was in previous generations.
