From the flyer:Hi! My name is Elysia Skye.
A week after my 24th birthday, I was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer in my right breast & auxiliary lymph nodes. Almost immediately, I underwent a double mastectomy, 18 weeks of intravenous chemotherapy, 5 1/2 weeks of radiation and reconstructive surgeries (expanders, implants, nipple skin graft and two fat graftings).
With all the disgusting side effects, I lost a significant amount of weight, all of my hair, had to replace my boobies with new ones, and now have lymphoedema in my right arm. As my hair fell out, I had an awesome mohawk for a few days! And despite not being able to work full time, I was constantly surrounded by my amazing friends and family, laughing more that I ever have, which is a better cure for cancer than any oncologist could recommend!
Which brings us to doday...in October 2008, we will be raising $30,000 to cure this very limiting, and often painful, lympoedema in my right arm. Because 22 lymph nodes were removed during my mastectomy, my right hand and arm began to swell roughly two months after the surgery. For almost three years, I have lived with a very swollen arm and hand that I have to wrap with compression bandages on a daily basis, and recieve weekly physical therapy and acupuncture treatments to maintain a somewhat tolerable level of swelling. No tonly are these treatments time consuming, they are very expensive. Additionally, a fat arm does not look good on camera (I wanna look awesome when I go on Oprah to tell my story!) Lymphoedema is an ailment that is not studied often and if this surgery proves successful, ,it will hopefully encourage other doctors to learn this microsurgical procedure and inspire other men and women with this ailment to think outside the box for treatment.
